Thranduil comforts his son after a nightmare.

Thranduil’s sleep was interrupted by cries from his son’s room. He immediately jumped out of bed and grabbed his robe, running into the adjoining room. His heart broke when he saw the state Legolas was in, sitting in the middle of his bed, tears falling down his cheeks, clutching his pillow as he continued to cry.

Thranduil picked up his son and hugged him close. Legolas buried his head in the crook of his father’s neck and wrapped his arms around him. Thranduil could feel the tears hitting his skin.

“Little Leaf, I have you. I am here,” he rubbed his son’s back. “What happened?” Legolas had stopped crying but his breathing hitched occasionally as he calmed. “Did you have a bad dream?”

“It was scary, Ada .” Legolas’ voice was muffled by his father’s hair.

Thranduil sat on the bed and put Legolas in his lap. “Ah, a nightmare.”

Legolas looked up at his father. “What is a nightmare, Ada ?”

“A nightmare is a very scary bad dream that seems very real. Is that what happened?”

Legolas nodded. “A big spider was trying to get in my room. I was calling for you but you did not come.” He began to cry again.

“Oh, ion. It was only a nightmare. It was not real. If you had been calling me, I would have come. I will always be here for you.” Legolas calmed again. “Come, you can sleep with me tonight.” He picked Legolas up and carried him into his room. Once they were settled in bed with Legolas cuddled in his father’s arms, Legolas looked up at his father.

“ Ada , do you ever have nightmares?” Thranduil thought for a moment, hoping these innocent nightmares of childhood were the worst Legolas ever experienced. The king did have nightmares. The pressures of ruling his kingdom, the lose of his beloved wife, caring for his people and making sure his son was happy and safe, caused terrible nightmares at times.

“Yes, Little Leaf, I have nightmares sometimes.”

Legolas crawled up to kissed his father’s cheek and then cuddled to his side again. “If you have anymore nightmares, Ada , you can come and sleep in my bed. I will make them go away for you.”

“Thank you, Little Leaf. I will remember that.” He kissed his son’s head and knew, at least, for tonight there would be no nightmares.
