Lindir walked through the halls of the Last Homely House. He was tired, but really please with the newest song he had written. He rounded a corner and stepped into the shadows. Lindir grinned and covered his mouth as she walked past him.

“Blast, where did he go?” Laur whispered. She continued up the hall and Lindir went the other way, hoping to make it to his room before she realized he had tricked her.

This cat and mouse game had gone on for weeks. Laur was a beauty and Lindir was very attracted to her. He had just been so busy getting everything ready for Lord Elrond’s begetting day celebration that he had not really had the time to spend to give her the attention she wanted and that he wanted to give her.

Each day she shadowed his movements, never coming up to talk to him, but always watching him. She always sat where she could see him in the dining hall, and sat near the platform in the hall of Fire when he sang. She had gone so far as to sneak one of his shirts from the laundry and she slept in it every night. And, she knew his favorite drink was fresh lemonade, so she made some for him, having it delivered to the minstrels during rehearsal. Erestor and Glorfindel had teased him about his doe-eyed admirer, but he did not let them get to him. He wanted her and he would have her.

Laur had seen Lindir when her family moved to Imladris. Her father was a soldier in the Imladrian guard and her mother one of the tailors. Laur wanted to sing and this is what drew her to Lindir. When he sang she felt like he sang directly to her. What she didn’t know was that was precisely what he was doing.

She had not seen Lindir with anyone in a romantic or intimate way so her hopes were kept alive. She practiced her singing in private, afraid she would make a fool of herself if Lindir were to hear her sing. Most of the time she sang near one of the waterfalls so the sound of the water drowned out he voice. Her parents beseeched her to leave the minstrel alone, but she refused. They had even spoken to Lord Elrond, afraid their daughter would embarrass the Lord of the Valley, but he assured them he had noticed Laur’s interest in Lindir and he thought it was a wonderful idea. He explained that he thought Lindir may be interested in Laur as well, but was too shy to make a move.

Laur was beginning to get discouraged when the celebration was nearing and all of her friends had escorts except her. She had her dress ready and had prayed to the Valar each night that Lindir would ask her to the party, but nothing had happened yet. She decided that today she would not follow Lindir around. It was too painful. She stood in her room, looking at her new dress. Cream colored with lavender flowers embroidered on the bodice and around the sleeves and skirt of the gown. She thought the lavender looked like Lindir’s unique eyes. She sighed and put the dress in the back of her wardrobe and left her room. She began to walk, not really thinking about where she was going.

Lindir noticed his lovely shadow was not with him today, and had been distracted by her absence all day. He asked around and a few had seen her walking out of the house earlier in the day. They said she looked sad and was not talking to anyone. Lindir was getting worried and asked the other musicians to rehearse without him.

Lindir was not sure where he was going, but he just let his feet and feelings lead him. He was walking towards a waterfall and as he got closer he heard the most beautiful voice, singing as if it was singing to him. The song was of unrequited love, heart ache, feelings of hopelessness and loneliness. Lindir stopped at the edge of the clearing and peered through the trees. He was surprised to see Laur, standing near the water singing loud and strong over the roar of the water. Tears streaked his face at the pain in her song.

Lindir realized he had unintentionally hurt her and now it was time to try and make it right. Slowly, he walked up behind her and waited for the final notes of the song before he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her against his chest.

“You are not alone, my love. I am sorry it has taken me so long, but I love you and I hope I am not too late.” Lindir whispered in her ear.

Laur tensed immediately when arms wrapped around her. When Lindir’s honeyed voice began to speak, she bowed her head and let the tears fall. She smiled at his words, so happy her love was returned. “No, you are not too late. If you had never come to me, I would still love you forever, my Lindir.”

He turned her and cupped her face. “You sang beautifully. I had no idea your voice was so beautiful. I am sorry I caused you such pain. I have cared for you for a long time, but felt you deserved more than I could give you, until now. Be mine, Laur. Be mine forever. I love you, pen vain.”

Laur smiled brightly. “I have always been yours, Lindir. I was just waiting for you to see it too.”

Lindir kissed her passionately, causing Laur to feel dizzy. Her knees buckled, but Lindir’s strong arms kept her from falling.

They were the most beautiful couple at the celebration, dancing and laughing, kissing and smiling at each other. Lindir went to the platform to sing and motioned for Laur to join him. She shook her head but with some urging from the party goers, Laur finally relented. Their joined voices filled the hall and everyone had tears in their eyes when the song finished. Lindir took Laur in his arms and kissed her long and hard in front of everyone. Cheers rose as the new lovers continued to kiss, oblivious to everyone around them.

Erestor and Glorfindel flanked Elrond who was clapping and cheering as well. “I hope you do not mind Lindir and Laur being the focus of your begetting day celebration, Elrond.” Erestor smiled.

“Not at all, meldir. I think this is the best begetting day gift I have ever received.” They made their way over to congratulate the beautiful couple.
