*****

It had been a very slow beginning, Gamling reflected. For Eomer had not known the touch of a man before and was still quite young. Despite roaming far from Edoras with his Eored in his days as a marshal, the new king had never indulged himself with his men; never let them comfort him with their bodies. It had been his choice, and Eomer had told him many times that he had refused to take advantage of his men that way for as their captain they could not tell him 'no'. It had taken a while for Gamling to convince his lover to even take a chance with him, to show him that it was not out of some twisted show of loyalty that the man wished for Eomer to share his bed.

It had been a gentle seduction, with the young king slowly warming to the idea of Gamling's solid presence by his side; and after a few months Eomer had also warmed to the idea of Gamling's presence in his bed as well. It had been a comfort to both of them after so much death and pain from the war, and the Rohirrim swore silently to himself that he would stand by his new king for as long as he drew breath.

But he had stopped breathing, the moment that Eomer had come to him pale and disturbed, telling Gamling that he had fathered a bastard child. An accident to be sure, but there it was; and everything had changed.

The first thing Gamling had done was demand to know why the woman had taken so long in telling Eomer. His lover had no answers, still deeply in shock about the unexpected news. It had taken several bottles of wine to get the full story out of him, but what was clear was that a woman had come to the king with an infant. She had claimed it had been sired by him, and from the reaction of his lover Gamling assumed that it was indeed possible.

So he had confronted her himself, demanding answers where he had no business asking. Stammering, the woman had replied that she and Eomer had met each other almost a year ago when he had passed her village on the way to Helm's Deep. He had been under great stress and she had felt compelled to 'ease' his suffering. Her alleged easing had resulted nine months later into a bouncing baby boy; and the king's new bastard son.

Gamling wondered exactly how it was that Eomer had been so foolish. True, he was a young man who had been under a vast amount of stress yet even so. To run the risk of siring a bastard when he was the king's new heir was beyond folly; and now not only was Eomer stuck in this position but Gamling as well. The older man was very firm in not leaving his new lover to handle a personal crisis on his own.

So now they sat, the both of them in Eomer's bedroom watching the dying sun cast growing shadows on the floor. Neither had spoken in over an hour, and the tension had grown and lessened to the point where there was now a quiet comfort in each other's presence. Finally tired of it, Gamling slapped his hands down on the table with a large bang which startled Eomer into whipping his head back and staring at him. The two looked at each other before the younger man got up and kneeled down in front of his lover.

"What would you have me do?" He asked quietly. "I cannot have this child become king; I cannot have him become known to our people. Indeed, I cannot have this child exist at all yet he is here. He is here and I will not have him killed, Gamling. I could not bear it; he is my child whether I wish it or no."

Gamling gripped the man's head and knelt down beside him on the floor. "I would never ask that of you," he whispered. "You must understand something Eomer. What you have done, it cannot be undone. This child is going to just go away. No matter where your son goes, and it is your son, he will always wonder who his father is and why he does not know him." Bowing their heads together until their forheads touched, Gamling continued. "What is best for the child, Eomer? That is the question that you must ask yourself."

The king nodded and threw his arms around the man. "Please do not leave. I should not expect you to stay with me and drag you into this but please. Please stay." There was a moment of sheer panic when Gamling did not reciprocate his affection, before a loud sigh blew Eomer's hair gently into his face.

"I will never leave you my king. Do not even think that; Eomer, I love you. You know this; do not think that I shall abandon you simply because things have become difficult. Do you truly think that little of me?" It was an unfair question, Gamling knew this. Yet he had been stung by Eomer's pleas against abandonment. Even with Theoden and Theodred gone, he had not thought that the new king would be so insecure. Perhaps it was with Eowyn leaving him to be with the Gondorian that this new instability had grown.

Fervently denying any disrespect towards his lover, Eomer drew Gamling closer to him before kissing him deeply. Undressing his lover and removing his shirt, the young Rohirrim lay on top of his lover and nuzzled his throat. "I wish to thank you, for everything Gamling. Especially for showing me this love; this in particular." Eomer kissed the other man softly on his stomach. "And this," kissing him lower down. "And this as well," he said softly before kissing Gamling on his erection.

Eomer smirked at the small gasp from the other man. "Shall I show you how much I have learned, Gamling? May I demonstrate to you how well you have taught me this past while? I think I need to prove to you how attentive I have been to your lessons." A whimper was his only answer as he ran his tongue down to the root of Gamling's cock.

"I think," Gamling said a tad breathlessly as Eomer gently spread the man's legs, "that you've learned more than I had planned."

Eomer laughed at the small sounds of pleasure coming from his lover when he used his mouth for more than talking. The Rohirrim king quickly straddled his lover and grinned when Gamling grabbed his shoulders and pulled him against his chest. Despite starting off gently and with no small amount of tenderness Gamling had also shown his warrior's side when he bedded the young man. There had been many times when Eomer had had to settle for leading Firefoot rather than riding due to a too sore backside.

"Is that a bad thing, I wonder?" Eomer asked before having his mouth thoroughly explored by Gamling's tongue. The Rohirrim guard rolled his king under him before thrusting hard against the younger man's body. A soft moan and a returned thrust was Eomer's response as Gamling quickly spread his lover's legs.

"Take me Gamling , show me how much you love me." Eomer said softly while caressing the man softly on his chest.

The words stopped Gamling cold. " Eomer, do not think that I will leave you because of the child. It will not happen, do not even think of it; and also do not think;" he added forcefully as he moved two of his fingers harshly into his lover, "that sex would ever keep me by your side."

Kissing him gently Gamling continued. " Eomer, do not worry over it. Whatever you decide, I will follow you. I will not stop sharing your bed unless you no longer want me to." Gamling smiled broadly for a moment as his hands trailed down to between Eomer's legs and squeezed gently. "And somehow I do not think that you wish me to leave just yet, hmm"

" Gamling, be quiet and take me!" Eomer hissed at him. It was one of the irritating things about loving a man, they tended to drag things out when with a woman it was easier to just take what he had wanted.

He didn't have to wait long as Gamling quickly removed his fingers and angled his hips into position. " Eomer, are you certain? The last time you were sore for several days," Gamling said in a low worried tone. Despite his lover's urgings, he had seen the pain on Eomer's face the last time he had taken the young man. His worries were needless apparently as Eomer threatened that his lover's life would soon be over if he did not continue what he started.

A hard thrust caused the man to yelp in pain, before Gamling soothed him. Strangely, it was now of all times that he thought of Eomer's bastard son. What would he look like when he was grown, would he have his lover's eyes, his hair, his chin? Closing his eyes against the image of a young boy with too familiar brown eyes he thrusted hard into his king.

Later, when the night had at last fallen across all of Rohan the two lovers lay together; sated for the present. Eomer rolled over and looked at Gamling, trying to decide whether his final decision about his...child, would be supported.

" Gamling, I've decided. The child, his mother; they will stay in Rohan. He will know who I am." The king looked anxiously at his guard, hoping that his decree would not cause a massive upset.

Gamling's face was impassive, irritating Eomer. "Well, what do you think? Is it what you would have decided?"

"What I would have decided is of no consequence, it is what you have decided that matters. Eomer, what are the reasons behind your actions?" Gamling tried not to give away his approval in his voice, it was important that Eomer not be influenced by his perspective.

The younger man looked at Gamling hesitantly, trying to gauge his reaction. " You, don't think it is a good decision?"

"That was not what I asked, I want to know what your reasons are. What are they Eomer?" Silence was his answer as his lover walked away and stood near the window gazing out to the direction of the village his son was now living in.

"Every child should know their father Gamling. I would have given dearly to have known mine. I would rather him know who I am and resent me for not being there, then be left wondering. It isn't fair to him, nor to me." Eomer looked back over his shoulder and was startled at Gamling's closeness to him. He hadn't heard the other man walk over.

"Then you've made the right decision. Come, come back to bed and lay with me Eomer. The sun has not yet come up and there's still time."

The king of Rohan turned and smiled wearily. "Time for what?"

The king's lover smiled at him and held out a hand. "Why don't I show you and you can find out."
