Whisper
"You are tense meleth," the voice whispered in his ear. Legolas shivered as the sound sent waves of pleasure over his body. Strong hands wrapped around his waist as a hot mouth nibbled along his neck.
"Haldir," he whispered, feeling the Lórien elf's love wrap around him as it had done in the Golden Wood. He leaned back into the welcomed embrace but he wished his love was far away from here. A feeling of foreboding had filled him as he'd watched the March Warden stride in to Helm's Deep. Though he was glad to see his lover, he did not want him anywhere near this place of Death.
"Let us see if I can relieve some of your tension," Haldir purred as he quickly opened Legolas' leggings. He wrapped long archer's fingers around the hardening shaft, stroking lightly. He loved to hear Legolas gasp in pleasure and he was not disappointed. He could feel the fear in his love and he did not like it. He would remove it if he could.
Languid and slow, he made sweet love to his Sindar elf. In Legolas' hands, his heart was securely held and he knew it was safe. When he slid deep inside his lover, he felt the connection between them snap into place. In an instant, he knew Legolas' fear, for him, for Aragorn, for all their people and the other races of Arda. It was almost too much for his love to bear. Therefore, he sought to take Legolas' mind from such fears, to replace it with his love.
When his woodland elf lay in his arms, sated and sleeping, Haldir raised his eyes to the stars.
"Elbereth, Vairë, Námo hear me. If... if I fall today," Haldir whispered, his breath hitching at the thought of leaving his love, "Do not let him fall with me. I would give my soul gladly to keep him safe."

Fight
Legolas looked up as pain lanced through his back. In the midst of the fight, he searched the battlements for his lover. A red haze settled over his eyes and his knives whirled in the darkness, catching the stray flashes of lightning. He moved towards Haldir's position, desperate to get to him.
Haldir fell back into Aragorn's arms. He stared at the stars overhead, seeing three sparkle brightly. He knew then that the Valar had heard him. They accepted his offer in return for Legolas' safety.
"Tell... him," Haldir whispered as he gripped Aragorn's tunic, "Tell... Legolas... I love... him."
"I will, mellonín (my friend)," Aragorn promised. He felt the rage building within him as he closed Haldir's eyes. With a roar, he unleashed his fury on the Uruk-Hai.
Neither Legolas nor Aragorn remembered much of the battle following Haldir's fall. When it was over, the Greenwood Prince was covered with black blood and his eyes held a feral intensity. With single-mindedness, he climbed the battlements to find Haldir. Easily he threw the bodies of Saruman's vermin, caring not where they landed. He gathered him into his arms, gently wiping away blood and grime from his beloved's face. He did not acknowledge when Aragorn and Gimli came to stand behind him.
"Give him back to me," he whispered softly as he began to rock.
"Legolas," Aragorn began, reluctant to approach but knowing this was dangerous for the elf, "he is gone."
"Give him back to me," Legolas said a bit louder.
"Laddie," Gimli began, placing a strong yet gentle hand on the elf's shoulder.
"GIVE HIM BACK TO ME!" Legolas screamed, clutching Haldir to his breast, "OR BY ERU I WILL FIND A WAY TO YOUR HALLS AND FIGHT YOU FOR HIM! GIVE HIM BACK!"
Tears streamed down Legolas' face. He cried and anger flowed off him in waves that could be felt even by those not raised by the elves. He curled around Haldir's body, refusing all attempts to remove him.
"Leave him," Théoden said softly, remembering the way he had collapsed outside Théodred's tomb, "His grief is new."
"His grief will kill him if we do nothing," Aragorn snapped. "It is as deadly as a sword stroke to the heart for them."
"Keep an eye on him then, but let him grieve. To hold it inside will only do more damage." Théoden replied. "We all must grieve."
Aragorn and Gimli kept watch over their friend and companion. When he finally collapsed in unconsciousness, Gimli carried him inside while Aragorn carried Haldir's body. In the morning, as Anor rose, they would burn the bodies of the elves and sing the lament. He then joined Gimli at Legolas' bedside. They would wait to see if their friend regained consciousness. It was going to be a long night.
When morning came once more, Legolas rose. Yet, his eyes had lost their sparkle and he was more subdued than usual. Even Gimli could not get a rise out of him. When he heard the news that Haldir's body had disappeared, he collapsed to the floor once more.

Resolved
Legolas silently closed the door to his chambers. He removed the coronet from his brow and tossed it on the dresser. Watching Arwen and Elessar together had brought home to him all he'd lost. Haldir. His heart still ached for his beloved. The quest to defeat Sauron had kept him focused; now he had nothing to occupy his mind. He could dwell on the emptiness in his heart.
Shrugging out of his clothing, he crawled into his bed although it was still the middle of the day. Curling around his pillow, he hugged it close. It could do nothing to assuage the emptiness where there used to be a strong Elven body. Haldir was gone and he would never love another. Perhaps he should answer the call of the sea and sail west.
"Aman would be just as empty without him by my side," Legolas cried softly. Tears flowed freely down his fair cheeks. He had thought he could cry no more tears but still they came. He grew exhausted from the weeping. Making a decision, he sat up and took one of his hunting knives. "There is only one place I wish to be, at his side."
He held the point over his heart, taking a deep breath; he prepared to shove the blade through his flesh. Suddenly there was heat at his back and strong hands closed over his. They took the weapon from his hands and tossed it into the corner. Angrily he tried to turn and berate his intruder. Yet, the arms held him still. Taut thighs slid to either side of his and a familiar scent wrapped around him.
"You do not wish to do that, gûr-a-gûren (heart of my heart)," Haldir whispered in his ear as he nibbled delicately.
"Haldir?" Legolas said, "Am I dreaming?"
"Nay, meleth (love)," he answered, "I am here. I will be here always."
"But I saw your body," Legolas cried, "There was no light in your eyes. Your soul was gone."
"I told the Valar I would gladly give my soul to see you safe, A'maelamin (my Beloved)," Haldir turned Legolas to face him, "And they kept me to my word. You are safe. You and your companions have saved Arda. I am your reward."
"You are returned to me?"
"You DID demand to have me back," Haldir chuckled as he undressed. "You even threatened Námo. He was rather amused by it."
"I have missed you so much," Legolas whimpered as Haldir's mouth closed around one nipple. He arched into his lover's mouth, burying his fingers in his pale blond hair. He parted his thighs in surrender, welcoming his love home.
Haldir took his time arousing his lover, teasing and licking every inch of his body. He gently prepared him, waiting until Legolas writhed and pushed back on his fingers before positioning himself between his lean thighs.
"This is my favorite part, A'maelamin (beloved)," Haldir groaned as he slid deep into his body, "When our bodies are joined and our minds are one."
"Yes," Legolas panted, gripping Haldir's forearms, "the only thing better would be the bonding of our souls."
Moving in perfect sync, the two elves reveled in their love. Their bodies strained against each other, skin slippery with sweat. Haldir claimed Legolas' mouth repeatedly, tasting his love in small sips and deep tastes. He moved within him gently at first and then with more fervor as they catapulted towards the edge of oblivion.
Gripping Haldir with legs and arms, Legolas screamed as he came, spreading hot seed between their bodies. The clenching of his inner muscles pulled the Lórien elf behind him and teeth sank into his shoulder, marking Legolas as his.
"I am yours, Legolas," he whispered as he laid gentle kisses over his luminescent face, "Now and for eternity."
"As I am yours, Haldir, until the end of time," Legolas answered softly.
Suddenly each elf gasped and tensed. Feeling a tearing sensation deep within them, they had no idea what was happening. It did not sink in until they felt the brush of the other's mind. The Valar had heard them and granted the unspoken request. They were now one for all time.
"Amin mela lle (I love you), Legolas Thranduiliôn," Haldir whispered as he kissed away his tears.
"Amin mela lle, Haldir o Lórien," Legolas answered.
