What I will beta: There's not too much I won't beta, however if you send me a Viggo/Orlando story, it really needs to be something that reaches out and grabs me because I have very strong opinions concerning this pairing. I do love Aragorn/Boromir, Boromir/Faramir, Boromir/Eomer, Sean/Viggo, Karl/Viggo, Karl/Sean and Karl/Elijah stories though. If it's an unusual pairing, either LOTR or RPS, send it to me. I'd love to get some femslash and well-written het too. I'm really great at writing sex scenes, so if you feel a little unsure in that area, please send me your stories and I'd be glad to help.
What I will NOT beta: Viggo/Orlando stories where Orlando is overly feminine and passive. I'm also not overly fond of canon stories - I believe that slash is about the imagination being freed. Turnaround time: Depends on length of story, but the average is 2 to 3 days because I'm a perfectionist.

What I will NOT beta: Any elf/dwarf pairings, wizards or hobbits; no femslash or RPHet; BDSM; no under-age sexual situations (rape or otherwise).
Turnaround time: On average it will take me between 5-7 days per story/chapter. This will depend on whether I have other stories to do, or because of general time constraints due to work etc. However, that said, it could also be between 2-4 days. I will always advise. If something arises and I can't get it done within that time, then I do let them know.
Type of file I prefer: doc as an attachment or as part of the email.

Turnaround time: Under 10 pages = 3 days or less.  Over 10 = 4 or more.

What I will NOT beta: AU, non-con, crossover fics. No incest or MPREG’s.
Turnaround time: 2-3 days, which is negotiable, depending on the length of the work and whether I’m committed to other work at the time.

Turnaround time: It depends on the fic length. 15 pages and under, 1-2 days. Over that, 3-4 days. I will always let you know when to expect your fic back when I receive it.
Type of file I prefer: However you wish to send it is okay with me. If there's a problem with the file, we'll work out another solution.

What a beta does:

The number one thing is to proofread the document for mistakes in grammar, spelling and typing. A beta needs a good working knowledge of grammar to do this. College English textbooks are excellent for reference.

A beta usually checks for errors in continuity. For example: you don’t want someone sitting in a chair that they moved a few minutes before.

A beta checks for canon errors, and points them out to the writer. You may need to tell the writer what the canon is for that particular passage. If you will not beta for canon, you do need to let your writer know upfront.

Many betas offer suggestions on how to make a fiction better and even assist in brainstorming for plot purposes.

Betas with English as a Second Language writers will encounter a few different problems such as structure, syntax and idiom. Most ESL writers I’ve ever worked with are eager to learn and very gracious about trying to improve their English.

As a beta, your job is make sure that your writer’s fiction looks as good as it can and reads like a dream. Or at least as much as you can do to help it do those things.

As a beta, one should try to encourage the writer but also insist that they proofread and spell check before they send the fiction to you. This will save you and them a lot of time.

If you run into a fiction that you cannot beta for whatever reason, please let the writer know so they can find someone else. It is rude to leave them hanging.
